"I am a people person."
I sat down with one of our Community Health Workers, Ada Feliciano, to learn more about her and how she got involved with the program. Check it out below!
Tatiana: How did you learn about the HDCHW program?
Ada: I learned about the CHW program through a friend of mine.
T: What seemed appealing about the position or program? Why did you decide to get involved?
A: I am a people person. I have worked as an esthetician my whole life. Working one-on-one and helping clients with their skin health has been my passion. Working as a community health worker has been a very similar experience.
T: What is your favorite part about your job?
A: My favorite part has been to actually be able to help patients reach their healthcare goals and provide the benefits they need.
T: What has been the most surprising about your job or the program?
A: The most surprising part of my job has been reaching so many people at the same time while doing community outreach and health fairs and receiving gratitude from them about our program. To gain their trust has been fulfilling.
T: What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?
A: Outside of work, I have continued working as an esthetician; in my free time, I study and love road trips, going to the beach and church.
T: Do you draw on any personal experiences to help you with your job?
A: There was a time I did not have insurance, and I was pregnant and couldn't find any kind of healthcare help to pay for my expenses. This experience draws me to help patients in our organization.
T: If you could wave a magical wand, what's one thing you would change about the world?
A: It would have to be empathy. There is such a lack of empathy in the world.
T: What's one local issue you think deserves more attention?
A: Homelessness.
